Frequently Asked Questions

How does Radio Fence Work ... ?

Plug the transmitter into a standard outlet and it emits a radio signal that travels along an underground wire. The lightweight receiver worn on your pet's collar picks up the radio signal and alerts him as he is nears his boundary that you have customized for your yard. If he continues into the boundary, he will receive a mild correction, similar to a static shock. Our maintenance free design and ease of installation offers tremendous savings when compared to conventional fencing and other systems of this type. Our exclusive features include; a microprocessor based code to eliminate false signals, uses inexpensive batteries commonly found at most retail stores and the only UL Classified and FCC Certified system on the market. In addition, our Ultralight receiver is the smallest and lightest on the market.

Can multiple pets be trained on the same system... ?

Hide-A-Fence makes it easy to train your pet. By spending just 15 minutes a day working with your pet, he can be fully trained in 1-2 weeks. You can train as many pets as you want on the same system, as long as they are each wearing a receiver collar.  Additional receivers are available if your have more than one pet.

What is the difference between the Ultralight and Standard receivers ... ?

The Ultralight Receiver is the smallest receiver in the world at only 1.5 ounces. As a rule of thumb, the Ultralight is recommended for pets under 50 pounds including cats. The Ultralight is an Omni-directional receiver so it will pick up the signal regardless of its position. The Ultralight requires (2) three volt lithium batteries. Average battery life is seven months.

The Standard Receiver weighs just 2.3 ounces and is not Omni-directional. The Standard Receiver's shock intensity is stronger than the Ultralight making it more appropriate for larger dogs, (over 50 pounds) or certain breeds such as Labs, Hounds, Huskies, Shepherds, etc. The Standard Receiver requires one 6 volt battery. Average battery life is four months.

Can my cat be contained with this system ... ?

Yes, it has been our experience that cats respond well.
Call 800-565-9879 for further information.

Can my horse be contained with this system ... ?

Yes, it has been our experience that horses respond exceptionally well to the system. Call 800-565-9879 for further information.

How close can my pet get to the wire ... ?

The range on our transmitters is adjustable.  While we recommend you have a least a five foot signal field, the range is adjustable from virtually no signal up to 30 feet on each side of the wire.

How many pets can be put on the system ... ?

An infinite number but each must be wearing a receiver collar.

What size or type pet can be used on the system ... ?

Any size dog however, he must be trainable and able to comfortably wear the receiver. Any size horse can be trained on the system—our experience has been that very minimal training is required. In some instances pet goats and pigs have been trained; it depends on the individual animal.

Can the receiver be used on my pet's present collar ... ?

Yes.

How often do you have to replace the battery ... ?

Every 3-6 months. Battery life depends on how often your pet "tests" the boundary & the type of receiver.

How long does it take to install ... ?

Allow approximately 5-8 hours  for every 500 ft. of boundary wire installed. It does depend on the layout, soil conditions, terrain, etc.

Will the correction from the receiver collar be strong enough to keep my pet in the yard ... ?

No. One of the biggest misconceptions about underground fencing is that the "shock" alone will keep your pet within its boundary. While the beep and shock emitted by the receiver are a vital part of the Radio Fence® system, the most important component is the TRAINING (which is described fully in the manual)! The shock is simply there to act as an "attention getter", a reminder of the location of the pets boundaries. When the dog hears the beep or receives the correction, he will be reminded that he is to remain within his boundary as he was trained to do. Also, the beep and shock make him aware that he is at the edge of his safe zone…"play zone".

Can the system be used with puppies ... ?

Yes, but your pet must be at least four months old and beginning to obey basic commands such as sit, stay, come etc.
